Signing vs. Using a PIN: What’s the Difference?
When you sign for a debit card purchase (sometimes called running it as “credit”), the transaction goes through the Mastercard® card network. When you use your PIN, it’s processed as a traditional PIN debit transaction.
Both options pull money from your checking account, but signing generally provides stronger protections if something goes wrong.
Why Signing Is Safer
-
Enhanced Fraud Protection
Signature transactions are often treated like credit card purchases when it comes to fraud investigations. That means disputes can be resolved more quickly and easily, and you’re less likely to be held responsible for unauthorized charges. -
No PIN Exposure
Every time you enter your PIN, there’s a small risk someone could see it, or that skimming devices could capture it. Signing eliminates this risk entirely. -
Peace of Mind
Signing still draws funds from your checking account, but gives you extra protection, especially for larger purchases, travel, or unfamiliar merchants.
How to Choose the Right Option
-
Select “credit” at checkout to sign with your debit card. Even though it’s still a debit card, this lets you add the protections of a signature transaction.
-
Use PIN at ATMs or when cash back is needed.
-
Sign for travel, gas stations, online or high-dollar purchases, or when buying from unfamiliar businesses.
Tips for Safer Debit Card Use
-
Monitor your account regularly
-
Set up alerts through online banking or the WSB mobile app
-
Report suspicious transactions immediately
-
Use our debit card management platform. Currently CardValet but, soon to be WSB Card Control (coming this Spring) to manage purchases and protect your account.
Bottom Line
When given the choice, signing for debit card purchases is the smarter move. It offers enhanced security, better fraud protections, and peace of mind without changing how you access your money.
Your debit card works hard for you let it work safely. Next time you’re at checkout, sign whenever you can.
